SJHSS, Mount Carmel triumph

KOTTAYAM: Pulincunnu’s St. Joseph’s HSS boys, the National Schools League bronze medallists and Kottayam’s Mount Carmel girls emerged champions in the fifth Ephreme’s Trophy all-Kerala inter-school basketball tournament at Mannannam on Monday.

Both the finals were close contests. St. Joseph’s, riding on Samju A. Joy’s fine form, defeated host St. Ephreme’s 69-63 while Mount Carmel, with Ashey Mathew doing much of the good work, defeated G.V. Raja Sports School.

A new event, for under-12 boys, was introduced this time and KE HSS, Mannanam, defeated St. Ephreme’s 39-32 to win the title. Jerin Johnson and Thomas Sunny led the KE scoring.

Former Indian captain C.V. Sunny gave away the prizes.

The results (finals):

Finals: Boys: St. Joseph HSS, Pulicunnu 69 (Samju A. Joy 22, Ashin Xavier 14, Johnny Cherian 11) bt St. Ephreme’s HSS, Mannanam 63 (Nobin Antony 12, Rony Mathew 12, Jobin Varghese 12).

Girls: Mount Carmel HSS, Kottyam 63 (Ashey Mathew 19, Shija Joseph 11) bt G.V. Raja Sports School, Thiruvananthapuram 58 (S.S. Anjali 15, Akhila 15, Arya 12).

Under-12 boys’ final: KEHSS, Mannanam 39 (Jerin Johnson 20, Thomas Sunny 13) bt St. Ephreme’s 32 (Ashis Joseph 13).

Semifinals: KEHSS 27 (Jerin Johnson 12) bt St. Joseph’s UPS, Mannanam 13; St. Ephreme’s 41 (Ashis Joseph 16) bt St. Aloysius, Athirampuzha 15.
