Lok Sabha MP seeks protection
Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI: Lok Sabha member Atiq Ahmed on Sunday sought protection from the Central government stating that he feared threat to his life.
In a statement from Delhi, Mr. Ahmed — who was elected to the Lok Sabha on a Samajwadi Party ticket but expelled from the organisation subsequently — also said the Congress was the only party which could give India proper leadership.
In an evident bid to build bridges with the Congress to which he is understood to have sent feelers, Mr. Ahmed said the Congress alone had the experience to rule a country as diverse as India.
Not an absconder
Asserting that he is not an absconder, Mr. Ahmed has sought to send across the message that he was being victimised by the U.P. government and also Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh.
Last week, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati had alleged that Mr. Ahmed was part of a conspiracy being hatched by some Congress leaders to eliminate her.
