Deletion of 1.55 lakh names from voters’ list recommended

Special Correspondent

Verification drive to be done before final deletion

Final draft of electoral rolls to be announced

on February 7

1,282 booth-level officers and 134 nodal

officers appointed

SHIMOGA: Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer T.K. Anilkumar said here on Monday that the booth-level officers had recommended that nearly 1.55 lakh voters in Shimoga district should be deleted from the electoral rolls after verifying that they could not trace them at the addresses given by them.

Addressing a press conference, he said that most of the names of voters recommended for deletion from the electoral rolls were from Shimoga and Bhadravati.

He added that such cases of deletion recommended by the booth-level officials would be taken up for further verification.

He said that the first phase of verification of the electoral roll would be completed on January 23 and the second by January 31.

He said that the final draft of the electoral rolls, which should have been announced on January 10, would be announced on February 7, after the verification drive was completed in accordance with the guidelines given by the Chief Election Commissioner.

Mr. Anilkumar said that as many as 1,282 booth-level officers and 134 nodal officers had been appointed and their work was being supervised by the tahsildars at the taluk-level and assistant commissioners at the sub divisional-level.

Data collection

He said it had been decided to create the epic age profiles of the voters by collecting the information about the age of the voters who were between 18 to 20 years of age, and who were above 80 years.

Claims

He said that the claims and objections with regard to the deletion, correction or addition would be considered before the final list of voters was announced on March 10.

He said that nearly 45,000 applications for addition were received and 41,000 names were to be added to the rolls before the house to house verification drive was taken up in November 2007.

He said that new additions, deletions and transposition of voters from one place to another could be made in the electoral rolls by filling up the specified forms made available in the tahsildar’s office.

Scope

There was scope for addition of the new names during the house to house verification drive by providing the required documents, said Mr. Anilkumar.
