SHIMOGA: The Shimoga District Chamber of Commerce and Industry has appealed to S. Bangarappa, MP, to seek adequate allocation in the Union Budget for 2008 for the development of highways and railway lines in the district. In a memorandum submitted to Mr. Bangarappa on Monday, the chamber said that the district had the potential to emerge as an industrial and commercial centre. The annual collection of Central Excise and other taxes from the district was Rs. 250 crore. The fact that Cambridge Integrated Services had opened up its second unit in Shimoga spoke of its potential to grow as a major IT centre. The chamber’s demands related to railway infrastructure included introduction of an inter-city train between Shimoga and Bangalore, adequate funds for speedy completion of gauge conversion work between Shimoga and Talaguppa and extension of the railway line from Talaguppa to Honnavar to connect it to Konkan Railway, survey for a new railway line between Shimoga and Harihar, doubling the track between Birur and Shimoga and introduction of an electric train between Shimoga and Bangalore. The memorandum said that Tumkur-Shimoga highway should be converted into a four-lane express highway and national highways 13 (Solapur and Mangalore) and 206 (Bangalore and Honnavar) should be improved.
