Government clears Rs. 444 crore works under NREGS

Even the physically challenged were shown some sort of jobs

Kakinada: The State Government has till now given administrative clearance for works costing Rs 444 crore under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS). The process of computerising the data has almost been completed and steps should be taken to do the remaining work at the earliest, Collector M. Subrahmanyam told officials in a meeting with the officials concerned. He said on an average employment for 23 days has been created for each eligible family and efforts should be made to achieve better result. The Labour budget was completed in all the mandals and works are underway in full swing.

The uniqueness of the NREGS in East Godavari, the collector pointed out, is that even the physically challenged were shown some sort of jobs at the work sites and it won appreciation from other States too where NREGS is under implementation.

Till now job cards were issued to 5,600 physically challenged people who possess different skills and more will be involved in the scheme in future.

The collector further said that horticulture crops were planned to be grown in 32,000 acres in 2008-09 under NREGS as against the 6,500 acres in 2007-08. Third party verification would be done in February. The prices will be fixed by a committee comprising project director of District Water Management Agency (DWMA), project officer of ITDA and assistant directors of Agriculture and Horticulture, after their visit to the nurseries.

DWMA project director Amarendra Kumar, Zilla Parishad chief executive officer D. Nagesh Babu, AP State Housing Corporation district manager R.V.V. Satyanarayana and others were present.
