People spend 16,000 cr. on liquor, says JVV
HYDERABAD: People in the State spend a phenomenal Rs. 16,000 crore on consumption of various types of liquor, according to the Jana Vignana Vedika.
While demanding closure of liquor/‘belt’ shops on the national and State highways to check accident deaths, the Vedika leaders charged the government with not taking any step to implement the Congress party’s pre-election promise of checking the consumption of liquor and closing ‘belt’ shops.
Revenue
The leaders, including A. Lakshmana Rao, former CJ of Allahabad High Court, criticised the government for selling a cheap liquor bottle costing Rs.2 at Rs.50 each and earning Rs. 8,450 crore as revenue this year, a rise from Rs. 3,572 crore in 2003-04.
