Andhra traditions come alive in Orissa

BERHAMPUR: People of all communities gathered up for a special community Pongal celebrations at Arya Vaishya Kalyan Mandapam in the city on Monday.

Telugu community decided to hold this event for the first time in the city, a day ahead of Pongal so that it would not interfere with the ritualistic celebrations at homes. People from all communities were invited for this special celebration.

A colourful rally was taken out at wee hours for the symbolic invitation of Goddess Laxmi to the venue. It followed the burning of ‘Bhogi’, the bonfire to mark the end of winter chill.

Then followed the cultural programs related to Pongal performed by young as well as aged .

A mass feast of traditional delicacies was the special attraction. ‘Tatpetagullu troupe from Srikakulam district also performed Around 30 per cent of the population of Ganjam and Gajapati districts of Orissa consists of Andhraites.
