No announcement in Tamil

At 10.30 p.m. on December 25, 2007, I was waiting to board the Mangalore-Chennai Express which arrived late at Tiruchi Junction. The announcement regarding the arrival of the train could not be understood because it was made only in English. This is a non-compliance/violation of the public announcement in railway rules. Though the railways are required to announce in the regional language (Tamil), this recurs at Tiruchi Junction, putting the passengers in trouble.

Dangerous tri-cycles

Open tri-cycles (fish carts) with heavy loads are a common sight in most busy traffic points. The carts which are fitted with small motors do not have a foolproof braking system. The protruding hardware materials loaded in these carts pose a dangerous risk to the following or preceding vehicles, especially during night. This may cause even fatal accidents. These carts are not licensed. The authorities must put an end to this menace by rehabilitating the operators in consultation with hardware, home appliances, furniture and stationery dealers, who mostly engage these vehicles. Small tempos can replace these carts. While celebrating “road safety” week, the safety of road-users may also be considered

Double track

Tiruchi was the headquarters of South Indian Railway and is in the centre of Tamil Nadu, thus fit for the second capital status. Any hesitation to lay double tracks after implementing the scheme up to Villuppuram in the north and from Dindigul to Madurai in the south would be ridiculous. The link will undoubtedly boost the earnings of the railways, increase the traffic, and serve the public as a quick, safe and convenient transportation. No other proof is needed than the on-going parallel project of four-way roadways to connect these places. Railway Board ought to do the needful immediately.

Rules not followed

The Road Safety Week was observed in the first week of January. The road safety rules and are not followed in their spirit. The following traffic violations should be dealt with severely at least from this year: use of dazzling lights in city limits, overloading of autos/ share-autos, non-use of lights and proper indicators in night. Will the Regional Transport Officer and Tiruchi City Police look into this matter?

Improve service

The postal department is launching many new products, but the department is showing a lot of apathy towards customers. The postal stationery sold by the department, viz. inland letters and envelopes, is of very poor quality. The department is selling inland letters printed 10 years back and the postal stamps do not stick properly. The delivery of ordinary letters is inordinately delayed even for nearby destinations. It is high time the department took suitable steps to improve their service to keep a people-friendly image.

Vestibule buses

The initiative of Tiruchi Transport Corporation in introducing vestibule buses has to be welcomed. But the people and students are disappointed over not introducing a vestibule bus on Karumandapam-J.J. College-Inamkulathur route. There are two engineering colleges, two polytechnics, three teachers’ training institutes and an agricultural college in the route. It is very difficult for students and people to travel during peak hours. A vestibule bus on this route can reduce rush. I hope the officials will do the needful.

Plant saplings

The bad condition of Shastri Road has already been brought to the notice of officials. For widening, both sides of the road have been dug and many trees cut. I request the authorities to plant saplings at the time of laying the road.

Glass bottles, please

Mineral water and milk should be sold in glass bottles, not plastic bottles or pouches which are supposed to be less damaging to the environment than glass bottles.
