Five killed in Karachi blast

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: At least five persons were killed and 40 injured when a bomb went off in a crowded market in Karachi on Monday evening during a visit by President Pervez Musharraf to the city.

Private television stations said at least nine were killed.

The bomb went off in a crowded fruit and vegetable market a little after 8 p.m. in the Quaidabad area of Landhi Industrial Area, five kms from the Karachi airport. The bomb was likely attached to a motorcycle, Sindh Inspector-General of Police Azhar Ali Farooqui told journalists. He confirmed that five persons were killed in the blast.

Lawyers’ protest

AP, PTI report:

Hundreds of lawyers joined a march here on Monday to protest against the house arrest of the former Supreme Court judge, Rana Bhagwandas. Mr. Bhagwandas was confined to his house on Saturday shortly after he addressed a meeting of the local Bar Association and urged lawyers to boycott judges who had endorsed last year’s emergency.
