Anantapur
ANANTAPUR: Minister for Panchayat Raj J.C. Diwakar Reddy on Monday stated that he was very much in favour of a united Andhra Pradesh instead of separation, region-wise. However, he would favour merger of Anantapur with Karnataka in the event of separate statehood to different regions in the State, he said. Talking to mediapersons here, he felt that Anantapur district had a problem of irrigation water; it could be solved only if the district was identified with Karnataka, in the event of formation of separate States out of Andhra Pradesh. Water from Tungabhadra project would not be allowed into Anantapur by Karnataka farmers regardless of it being allocated. Farmers of the district could be assured of water if it was merged with Karnataka, he opined. He, however, said he would still advocate a united Andhra Pradesh and there was no reason for separation. Language-based States were necessitated in the past due to lack of communication facilities. DevelopmentWith the advent of technology, all the practical problems of communication had been overcome and the only priority for the people should be development, not language or region. Telugu people could settle anywhere and develop themselves and their societies. People of any region could press and fight for development, if but separation was not the only way out.
