Mobile biodiversity festival launched
Staff Reporter
Sangareddy: The ninth annual mobile biodiversity festival that began from Indoor village of Raikode mandal on Monday will be stressing the need to save scarce water in the dry lands of Medak district by growing millets.
The on-wheel festival would be covering a large number of villages on its way back to Machnoor for the concluding ceremony, almost after a month.
Villagers have decorated bullock carts.
Speaking to The Hindu P.V. Satheesh, Director of Deccan Development Society (DDS) said hundreds of acres are cultivated without irrigation in the DDS area and each farmer saved about 60,000 litres of water per acre.
Despite lack of irrigation, lands are full of green crops, indicating valuable biological diversity, where as the paddy fields exude methane gas, he said.
He pointed out that millets not only provide nutrition to the poor but also ensure food sovereignty.
