Fast track courts sought
K.T. Sangameswaran
CHENNAI: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the State Police has proposed to the Tamil Nadu Government to take up with High Court a proposal for setting up of a Fast Track Court (FTC) in Chennai.
This is to ensure speedy disposal of cases against NBFCs and other companies which were registered prior to the Tamil Nadu Protection of Interests of Depositors (in Financial Establishments) Act taking effect. This has been done as several of the NBFC and nidhi depositors were senior citizens who often approached the EOW for speedy disposal of cases and refund.
The Additional Director-General of Police, EOW, Archana Ramasundaram, told The Hindu, that there were about 70 cases pending in the courts of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate, Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate and the Saidapet Court.
The cases had been registered for offences under sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 409 (criminal breach of trust by public servant, or by banker, merchant or agent) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) IPC. The oldest case had been registered in 1996.
Though the number of cases may be less, the depositors were about five lakh and Rs.900 crore was involved. Hence, a proposal for setting up of an FTC.
