National load despatch centre will be set up in June: PGCIL chief

Special Correspondent

‘Ready to help Bescom on laying underground cables in Bangalore’

BANGALORE: A national load despatch centre will be set up in June for round-the-clock monitoring of power availability and demand across the country. It will also co-ordinate with other countries on power availability situation.

Speaking to presspersons after delivering the 19th Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Lecture on “Electrical power transmission – present challenges and future road map” at a function organised by the Central Power Research Institute in Bangalore on Wednesday, Chairman and Managing Director of the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited R. P. Singh said the National Load Despatch Centre to be located in Delhi would coordinate with the regional and State load despatch centres.

The inter-regional power transport capacity of the country’s power network was proposed to be increased from the present 17,000 MW to 42,000 MW by 2012. Such a massive increase in the inter-regional transport capacity was necessitated due to seasonal variations in power consumption in different regions.

Due to the geographical differences in different regions of the country, the seasonal power consumption pattern also varied from region to region.

While the southern States reeled under power shortage now due to summer, some northern and north-eastern States had additional power. Similarly, the southern region had surplus power recently during the rainy season. But the power consumption had gone up then in some northern States. Building a high capacity inter-regional power transmission network would help transport electricity from the power-surplus states to those in need of power, he said.

Mr. Singh reiterated that the PGCIL was still ready to help the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited and Bescom with laying underground power transmission cables in Bangalore.

The city can get rid of the mesh of overhead power lines and ensure electrical safety to people. The PGCIL had put across the proposal to the KPTCL a couple of years ago.
