Tamil Nadu
The heritage tourism in the district is set to witness a boom as the district administration has chalked out elaborate plans to augment infrastructure at tourism spots of historic importance over the next few fiscals. The district is blessed with abundant heritage sites which can beckon tourists from all over the globe. Starting with places of worships like Navathirupathi temples and four-century old Our Lady of Snow Church, a tourist can have a wide array of destinations to choose from. The ancient Roman Catholic Church situated at Manapad situated about 60 km from Tuticorin town, will offer a treat to the people who wish to traverse through the pages of history. The Cross at the top of the church is said to have been brought from Jerusalem. Moreover, the church is directly associated with St. Xavier, the famous missionary from the West. Civilised habitationFor those who are interested in archaeology, Athichanallur situated on the banks of river Tamarabarani is the right destination. It is assumed that a civilised habitation existed there very long back, after archaeologists recovered some urns and mud vessels used in ancient era from the place. The place is now directly under the supervision of Tamil Nadu Archaeological Department. Another destination, Kazhugamalai situated about 90 km from Tuticorin, too can be considered historians’ paradise. The Jain cave temple and Jain architecture are a treat to watch. Besides, a Murugan temple named Kazhugasalamoorthy kovil, which belongs to 18th century is also situated adjacent to the Jain cave temple. Similarly, the district also holds one of the six abodes of Lord Subramaniya in the state at Tiruchendur. The sculptures and temple tower at the Lord Subramaniyaswamy temple there are worth seeing.
