Kerala to press for railway projects

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government will take up with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Railway Minister Lalu Prasad the delay in sanctioning the railway projects promised to the State when the Palakkad division was bifurcated for setting up the Salem division.

A meeting of MPs from the State convened by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan here on Wednesday authorised him to submit a memorandum to Dr. Manmohan Singh and Mr. Prasad this month itself for sanctioning an exclusive railway zone and a coach and wagon factory for the State. The meeting, held in the wake of the presentation of the Union Railway Budget in Parliament on February 28, discussed 22 matters pertaining to the railway network in the State.

The Chief Minister asked the MPs to put pressure on the Centre and the Railway Minister to get railway projects for the State and more allocation in the budget.

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister M. Vijayakumar, who also holds the portfolio of Railways, said the meeting also decided to demand freight and passenger corridors linking all ports and major cities in the State. The meeting decided to take up with Railways expeditious completion of the doubling of the railway network in the State and begin suburban services for short-distance commuters. The proposed Nilambur-Nanjencode railway line should be sanctioned for the benefit of the information technology industry.
