Trains to have GRP or RPF security

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: All the trains passing through Kerala will have security personnel either from the Government Railway Police (GRP) or the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in a phased manner in coming days.

A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting held here at the Divisional Railway Office to review the safety and security of railway commuters and the rail network.

Top railway officials, personnel of the GRP and the RPF attended the meeting.

It was also decided at the meeting to take steps to provide Very High Frequency (VHF) sets for one-to-one communication between the guard of the train, the loco pilot and the police personnel posted on the train.

Divisional Railway Manager Titus P. Koshy, who presided over the meeting, assured that the railways would provide the necessary input to the GRP for improving policing.

Superintendent of GRP P.G. Ashok Kumar said that 48 trains had mobile patrol and there was day beat on another 36 trains.

Divisional Security Commissioner K.K. Ashraf and Additional Divisional Railway Manager H. Sulthan Mushatick also attended the meeting.

Enhancing the strength of GRP for train escort, assault on gate keepers at level cross gates, increasing trend of theft of passenger belongings from trains and railway premises, drugging cases and sand-mining were also discussed.
