The removal of the ban on jallikattu is welcome. The State government should put in place a regulatory mechanism to ensure that there is minimum injury to people and the least pain to the animals. Raghu Seshadri, Chennai The court’s reconsideration of its original order has reinforced its neutrality and sincerity in upholding justice. When there is no ban on the merciless killing of animals for sacrifice to gods, why should jallikattu be banned in the name of cruelty? The sport actually affords an equal opportunity to bulls to fight human beings. K. Srinivasan, Tiruvanaikoil The apprehensions of animal rights activists are exaggerated. In any adventure sport, there is a latent risk, be it motor sport, boat racing or surfing. Farmers who commit suicide in thousands because of faulty government policies outnumber those injured in jallikattu. Millions are displaced by land grabbers in the name of special economic zones. Let rights activists spend more time on these issues. The hype created by animal protection groups is unwarranted. In villages, animals and human beings coexist and there is a personal bonding. Bulls are given the best food, excellent sheds and the kind of treatment that an ordinary man can ill afford. Bullfights in countries like Spain are gruesome. The animal is killed at the end of the event. Here, the bull is treated like a hero. Hence jallikattu should be treated as a sport. S. Veeraraghavan, Madurai
