Jammu: Peerzada Mohammad Sayeed has resigned as both Jammu and Kashmir Minister and Pradesh Congress Committee president following allegations of bribery levelled by a legislator. Governor S.K. Sinha has accepted his resignation as Education Minister. Last week, Shoaib Lone (independent) alleged in the Assembly that Mr. Sayeed demanded and took from him Rs.40,000 for giving permission to his sister for opening an elementary teacher training institute. The police arrested Mr. Sayeed’s driver as a threatening call was allegedly made from his phone to Mr. Lone. The legislator said Mr. Sayeed’s wife made the phone call and the driver was merely a “conduit.” The police have also registered a case against her. After Mr. Lone mentioned Mr. Sayeed’s name, Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad summoned him to hear his stand. Immediately, Mr. Sayeed offered his resignation stating he was quitting “on moral grounds” and termed the allegations a political conspiracy.
