GoM meet to decide on fuel price hike today

Sujay Mehdudia

NEW DELHI: The Group of Ministers (GoM), headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, will meet on Thursday to decide on the issue of hike in prices of petroleum products in view of the spiralling international crude prices.

The Left parties and the Bharatiya Janata Party have opposed a hike in fuel prices and called for restructuring the duty structure instead of burdening the common man.

Congress’ nod

Official sources said that the Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister, Murli Deora, had held parleys within the Congress and its leadership on the issue.

It is learnt that the party has given the go-ahead for adjustments in petroleum prices with the rider that minimum pressure should be put on the common man and all avenues should be explored before undertaking any kind of hike.

Asked about the possibility of a decision on the price hike at tomorrow’s (Thursday’s) meet, Mr. Deora told reporters that he hoped that the GoM would take a decision.
