Kochi basketball teams on a merry run

KOCHI: Kochi’s Central Excise, thriving on some wily play by the seasoned Sunny Thomas, defeated Chennai Customs 86-55 and retained the men’s basketball title in the Central Revenue South Zone championship at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium here on Wednesday.

The match between a bunch of players well past their prime, was often slow, but Kochi Excise, the Federation Cup champion three years ago, was clearly superior. Kochi Customs defeated Hyderabad Income Tax in straight sets and won the men’s volleyball title and in football, host Kerala’s Central Excise will meet Chennai Customs in the final on Thursday at the Thevara’s Sacred Heart College Stadium.

Christy’s golden run

K.A. Anish, a former Kerala champion, won the men’s badminton title and in athletics Tamil Nadu’s C. Christy won three gold (100m, 100m hurdles and long jump) rather comfortably.

GGCC is champion

GGCC won the Kannur district ‘C’ division cricket league, beating Kannur United by three wickets here in the final.

The scores: Kannur United 132 in 34 overs (Lineesh 40) lost to GGCC 133 for seven in 30.4 overs (Yahiya 45, Siraj 40).

Easy for MSP HSS

MSP HSS (Malappuram) thrashed Andhra Pradesh Sports School (Secunderabad) 4-1 in the Mar Athanasious Trophy all-India inter-school football tournament in Aluva on Wednesday.

The results (quarterfinals): MSP HSS 4 (P. Shahanavas 2, P.K. Abu Niyas, H. Sreejeesh) bt AP Sports School 1 (T. Shoban).

Tuesday’s result: Subulu Salam HSS, Moorkkanad, Malappuram 5 (Abdul Basim, M.T. Sameer, Fasil, K. Sabith, Riyas) bt Govt HSS, Meenangadi, Wynad 1 (C. Azkar).
Saji shines

An all-round performance by T. Saji (78 & four for 19) was the highlight of Zeros CC’s 38-run win over Chasers CC in the 13th Celestial Trophy all-Kerala cricket tournament at the Medical College ground in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.

The match between Presidency CC (Tiruvalla) and Packers CC ended in a tie but the former advanced as it had made more runs when the scores in the penultimate over of the innings were compared, as per the tournament rules.

Zeros CC 178 in 30 overs (T. Saji 78, Rajesh three for 17, Renjith three for 23) bt Chasers CC 140 in 25.4 overs (S. Rajesh 36, Rajneesh 36, T. Saji four for 19, Sabu three for 20).

Referees clinic

The Kerala Basketball Association will conduct a referees test and a clinic in three-person officiating at the St. Joseph Pontifical Seminary, Mangalapuzha, Aluva, on January 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A practical test for those who have appeared in the referees test earlier will also be held. Basketball championship

The Ernakulam District Basketball Association will conduct the mini-district schools basketball championship on January 18 (for girls) and January 21 (boys) at the Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium, Kadavanthra.

Colleagues beat Government Medical College by two wickets in the Kozhikode district ‘A’ division cricket league.

The scores:

‘A’ division: Govt. Medical College 162 for eight in 31 overs (Faeez 63 not out) lost to Colleagues 167 for eight in 30.3 overs.
