Mandya, Mysore to host State Olympics

BANGALORE: The Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) in alongwith Karnataka Olympic Association (KOA) will conduct the State Olympic Games at Mandya and Mysore from February 4 to 10. The swimming and shooting events will be held at Bangalore.

Mr. Amar Kumar Pandey, Commissioner, DYSS said two districts would host the event, which is to be made an annual affair.

Over 3700 sportspersons are expected to participate in 22 events, which has a budget of Rs 1.67 crores.

Mandya will host the archery, badminton, boxing, football, fencing, kabaddi, kho-kho, taekwondo, volleyball and netball events while the athletics, basketball, cycling, gymnastics, hockey, tennis, TT, triathlon, wrestling and weightlifting events will be held at Mysore.

Hockey trials

Karnataka State Hockey Association will conduct selection trials in two sessions, morning and evening on January 18 at the KSHA stadium in Bangalore to choose a team for the junior (u-18) Nationals in Hyderabad from February 8 to 18. Players born on or after January 1, 1990 are eligible and they should report at 7 a.m. with kits and age proof certificate.

HASC continues to do well

HASC continued its good showing in the BDFA-conducted veterans football tournament. At the Football Stadium here on Wednesday, HASC downed Bangalore Veterans (Austin Town) 4-1.

Lawrence Sr. scored two goals, while Lawrence Jr. and Khaleel Ur Rehman notched the other goals for the winner. Sukumaran reduced the margin.

In an earlier match, AFJ Sports Club and Benson Town SC drew goalless.

In the ‘C’ division action at the Austin Town ground, Young Challengers downed Mohammedan Sporting 2-0 with a brace from Surya (fifth and 40th minutes).

At the I.I.Sc ground, Velu Socials edged past I.I.Sc by an odd goal in three also in ‘C’ division. C. Selvan (13th) and Chandru (20th) scored for Velu Socials after Hari gave I.I.Sc the lead in the second minute.

Tuesday’s results: Veterans: ITI 2 (T.L. Andrew 2) bt ADE 1 (D. Umapathy); Periyar Nagar 2 (Kathiravan 2) bt Gowthampura SC 0.

‘C’ division: Young Muslims 2 (Satish, Kishore) bt Jawahar Union 1 (Navin).

Comprehensive win for City Cricketers

City Cricketers scored a comprehensive six-wicket win over Someshwar Cricketers (Ullal) in the final of the second division tournament, conducted by Dakshina Kannada District Cricket Association for the Canara Bank Trophy, at Mangalore on Tuesday.

Someshwar Cricketers, who batted first, was bundled out for 114 in 25 overs. City Cricketers reached the target in the 24th over.

Both teams have been promoted to the first division.

The scores (final): Someshwar Cricketers 114 in 25 overs (Imran 29 n.o., Imtiaz three for 12) lost to City Cricketers 118 for four in 23.5 overs (Riyaz 51 n.o.).

Kundapur SC beats Ramakrishna HS

Kundapur SC scored a 72-run win over Ramakrishna HS in a pool B fixture in the Ramco Cup cricket tournament in Mangalore on Wednesday.

The scores: Kundapur SC 147 for nine in 25 overs (Sachin 44, Inzamam-ul-Haq 40, Karthik two for 17) bt Ramakrishna HS 75 in 19.1 overs (Deekshith 38, Karthik two for four, Pranav two for nine, Chandramohan two for 18).

Pool ‘D’: DKCA 138 for five in 25 overs (Padmanabh Bhandary 37, Pavan Raj two for 25) bt Kendriya Vidyalaya No. 1 (Panambur) 112 in 23.2 overs (Vikram three for 22).

Pool ‘A’: Ullal Cricket Academy 120 for 8 in 25 overs (Kaushal 48, Manjunath three for nine) bt St. Aloysius ‘B’ 105 in 24.3 overs (Clifton 31, Aziz four for 23).
