Church, NSS raising non-issues: VS

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Wednesday criticised Christian Churches and the Nair Service Society (NSS) for making an issue of ‘non-issues.’

Talking to the media after the weekly Cabinet meeting, he said the government had taken no decision to entrust appointments to aided schools to the PSC, change school timings or implement curriculum reforms. However, the Churches and the NSS had been running a campaign over these issues. He had invited them for talks three times, but they excused themselves. He said that proposals in the LDF’s manifesto would be carried out only after discussions about their feasibility in its State committee.

Crime rate

Mr. Achuthanandan said it was wrong to portray Kerala as a crime-ridden State just because the number of cases registered in the State was high. A large number of cases were getting registered in Kerala unlike in other States because of its high literacy, social awareness and cultural background. This did not mean that the law and order situation was worse in the State, he said in reference to the statistics of the Crime Records Bureau (CRB) for 2006. He recalled that Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil himself had stated that Kerala was a peaceful State compared to other States.

Land for IIST

The Chief Minister said no decision had been taken on allocation of additional land to the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) of the Indian Space Research Organisation.
