Rise in sales in Erode Uzhavar Santhai

Heavy rush: Large numbers of people thronged the Sampath Nagar Uzhavar Santhai in Erode, during Pongal.

ERODE: The Uzhavar Santhai situated at Sampath Nagar in Erode received a record quantity of 18.6 tonnes of vegetables on January 13, two days before Pongal.

The Agricultural Officer in-charge of the Uzhavar Shandy, Sampath Nagar, Erode, L. Kulandaivelu, told The Hindu, “Four uzhavar shandies are functioning in Erode district at Sampath Nagar (Erode), Gobichettipalayam, Dharapuram and Sathyamangalam. On normal days 12 tonnes of vegetables will arrive at the Sampath Nagar market and eight to nine tonnes each at the other three shandies.”

He said for the current year Pongal, on January 13 alone, 149 farmers brought 18.6 tonnes of vegetables to the Erode Sampath Nagar Farmers Market, which is stated to be an all-time record arrival.

All the 18.6 tonnes of vegetables were sold within three hours. He added that for the two days, 12 to 14 tonnes of vegetables were sold.

In other three markets also, the arrivals of vegetables had increased.

One of the banana farmers, Palanisamy of Vadugapatty, said, “For the last three years, I am bringing banana to the Erode Uzhavar Shandy, where every week I am selling Rs. 3,000 worth of banana and earning good profit.”

Similarly Natarajan of Mullampatty, Kanjikoil, said, “I am selling banana leaves, collected from my own land, and am earning well.”

Mr. Kulandaivelu said two more such markets, one at Erode Periyar Nagar and the other at Perundurai Karumandichellipalayam, would soon start functioning in the district.
