Two acres of land for court complex

Meeting chaired by Additional Chief Secretary

Allocation after formal request by District Judge

KOLLAM: A high-level meeting called by Additional Chief Secretary K.J. Mathew in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday has cleared two acres of land by the side of the proposed Link Road at Asramam for the Kollam court complex.

The government will allocate the land to the Judicial Department on submission of a formal request by District Judge P. Bhavadasan.

The meeting was attended by District Collector A. Shajehan, Mr. Bhavadasan, Kollam Bar Association president Varinjam Ramachandran Nair and secretary M.A. Salam.

A separate court complex has been a long-standing demand of the legal fraternity here.

The meeting followed a High Court directive on the basis of a contempt of court petition filed by Mr. Salam. Earlier, Mr. Salam had filed an open petition before the High Court praying for allocation of land for a separate court complex. The main ground cited was lack of proper facilities at the court rooms.

The courts are presently functioning from the Civil Station complex.

Any demonstration in front of the civil station affects the functioning of the courts.

There have been incidents in which demonstrators hurled stones at the court during demonstrations.

The courts could not function during the one-and-a-half month strike by government employees during the rule of the previous United Democratic Front government. That had triggered the demand for a separate court complex.
