NDPL ties up with Delhi College of Engineering A pilot project to be launched in three months NEW DELHI: Residents of some parts of the Capital may soon boast of a new Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) technology that will allow them access to a host of services through existing power distribution lines. Power distribution company North Delhi Power Limited has tied up with Delhi College of Engineering to study the viability and application issues of BPL technology. The BPL technology allows use of existing electricity distribution lines as a transmission medium for information. A workshop to discuss the technology was organised on Monday where a live demonstration of the technology was made. According to the discom officials, Delhi College of Engineering and NDPL were earlier chosen by the Union Information and Technology Ministry as the nodal centres to study the viability of BPL technology for its adaptation in the country for rural and urban centres. “NDPL had earlier also done a brief test of the technology in its distribution network as part of the preliminary study. A pilot project will be launched in three months at Delhi College of Engineering and at an NDPL premise in Rohini to test the technology in detail,” an NDPL official said. The commercial aspect of the implementation will be taken up once the technical study is successfully completed. Officials explained that by using BPL technology any information that can be digitised can be sent over the power lines. Some of the services which could be provided include VoIP ; video on demand; video conferencing; interactive TV; remote monitoring, security and surveillance.
