Bank looting: arrest of two helps solve six cases

Staff Correspondent

The gang has been operating since December 2006

Two members have confessed to committing

the crimes: police

Teams formed to arrest remaining members

BELLARY: The arrest of two members of an alleged gang of criminals from Tiruchi in Tamil Nadu has enabled the Bellary police solve six cases wherein banks and customers from Karnataka and Maharashtra have been cheated.

Superintendent of Police Amrit Paul told The Hindu that the gang, led by Sachi of Ramji Nagar in Tiruchi, had been operating simultaneously at various places since December 2006. Two banks in Latur, one each in Solapur and Valasang, a branch on the outskirts of Pune and one in Bellary had been their main targets. The recent incident took place on January 9, 2007 here, in which a seven-member gang allegedly entered a bank, diverted the attention of the cashier and made away with Rs. 4 lakh in cash. The incident occurred so fast that the gang had left the bank even before the cashier could decipher what had happened. The police, on being informed of the incident, instructed officials on patrol to hunt for the criminals. Accordingly, a “naka-bandi” was imposed all over the district to check all vehicles, which resulted in their arrest. The Gadiganur police found a gang travelling in a tempo trax. On spotting the police, the members tried to flee, but two of them were arrested. A bag containing Rs. 3 lakh was also recovered from them. On interrogation, they revealed that they had committed such offences in many places, the police said.

Meanwhile, the District Crime Investigation Bureau (DCIB), which had managed to obtain two compact discs containing the recordings from Closed Circuit Televisions installed in various banks in Bidar, Pune and the State Bank of Mysore in Bellary found that the same gang had been involved in all the offences, Mr. Paul said. Teams had been formed to leave for Tiruchi and other places to arrest the remaining members, he added.
