Bird flu: State on high alert

Monitoring of migratory birds ordered

BERHAMPUR: The Orissa government has become extra cautious with cases of bird flu getting reported from adjoining West Bengal.

According to a senior administrative officer, instructions have been issued to all district collectors to ensure that no chicken and eggs entered into their areas from West Bengal where cases of avian flu had been confirmed. Orissa government on Tuesday ordered extensive monitoring of migratory birds in the Chilika lake as the centre had confirmed bird flu infection in neighbouring West Bengal.

The Chilika Development Authority (CDA) and the forest department have become cautious about the possibility of presence of avian flu affected migratory birds in the Chilika lake during this winter.

The recent emergence of bird flu cases in West Bengal has made the authorities extra vigilant. As per the officials of CDA, during this winter 22 birds died in the lake till now. According to the CEO of the CDA, Sudarsan Panda, the blood samples of these birds would be sent to High Security Animal Diseases Laboratory, Bhopal. The Bombay Natural History Society was also helping in keeping watch on migratory birds in the lake for possibility of bird flu infection.
