THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kollam port will soon become a full-fledged commercial port. The Cabinet on Wednesday decided to request the Centre to appoint a custodian under the Customs Act for the port. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan said that appointment of a custodian of port was being sought to enable commercial operations. The Cabinet also decided to grant interest concessions for a year starting January 23 for agricultural loans, not exceeding Rs.50,000, availed of from cooperatives after December 29, 2001. The losses would be reimbursed to the cooperatives so as not to affect their normal functioning, the Chief Minister said. A post of principal and 10 teachers would be sanctioned for Kozhinjampara Government College. Mr. Achuthanandan said the Department of Culture would sanction a pension of Rs.2,000 a month to the widow of stage artist Thoppil Krishna Pillai. The government would repay the bank loan of Rs.5 lakh availed of for studies by Varsha Gopinath who had died during aviation training in the Philippines. K.R. Sasidharan would be appointed as Director of Collegiate Education and Anil Xavier as Executive Director of Jalanidhi.
