THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Health Department has issued orders exempting the first batch of students of the Cooperative Medical College, Kochi, from having permanent registration with the Travancore-Cochin Medical Council for attending interviews for the posts of Assistant Surgeon in the Health Services Department. This is in view of the delay in getting approval of the Medical Council of India for the award of MBBS degree to students who studied at the college. So, they had been granted only temporary registration by the Travancore Cochin Medical Council. While the applicants could attend the interviews with the Public Service Commission, they would be required to produce permanent registration certificate before joining duty upon selection to the service. Notification soonHealth Minister P.K. Sreemathy told a press conference here on Wednesday that the Medical Council of India had informed the government that the college had been approved for the award of the degree granted by the Cochin University of Science and Technology after November 2007. The notification regarding the same from the Union government was expected shortly. The Minister said that widows and divorcees would not henceforth be denied pension on their sons attaining 20 years of age. Orders had been issued in this regard. (The Minister had convened the press conference to announce the order. However, the order turned out to be one that transferred the powers to continue pensions, if the son is not able to support the mother, from the Tahsildar to the panchayat president. An order was issued later in the day to give effect to the original proposal) Ms. Sreemathy announced that seven more persons representing organisations working for the welfare of elderly persons had been nominated to the State Council for Older Persons.
