THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Beneficiary committees of local self-government institutions (LSGIs) have been permitted to take up civil works up to the cost of Rs.5 lakh. Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty said in a release here on Wednesday that civic bodies were facing problems in tendering civil works. There were complaints that contractors were reluctant to take up such works. Earlier, the beneficiary committees had powers only to take up works with an estimate cost of Rs.50,000.
