Thiruvananthapuram: The State Women’s Commission has observed that all print, audio and visual media require a clear women’s policy. The Media Monitoring Cell of the Commission observed that while many news items and advertisements detrimental to women’s interests or which portrayed women in a poor light dominated the media, issues and events which led to women’s empowerment were soundly ignored. The Women’s Commission said that it would hold a joint discussion with the heads of various media organisations on the issue as a first step towards evolving a women’s policy for the media. TAM ratingThe Media Monitoring Cell observed that the TAM rating (Television Audience Measurement) system followed by television channels to attract advertisers did not subscribe to a policy of social commitment and that a more scientific rating system, which recorded the observations of serious television viewers, should be evolved. The commission will collect public opinion on the anti-women stance adopted by media. Those who took part in the meeting held here on Wednesday included commission member Rugmini Bhaskaran, secretary B. Sridevi, director V. Shantaram, R. Parvathi Devi, P.S. Rajasekharan, Usha S. Nair and Rajitha. Chairperson of the commission D. Sreedevi presided over the meeting.
