BHOPAL: The Madhya Pradesh Minister for Commercial Taxes, Babulal Gaur, said here on Wednesday that all preparatory steps had been taken at the State Government level and work on the ambitious Narmada water supply scheme for the State capital would begin in full swing after obtaining the mandatory clearances from the Union Ministry of Forest and Environment. Addressing media persons at his residence here, he said several development projects had been taken up in seven municipal wards here under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. These projects, costing Rs.34.27 crore would benefit residents—mostly the victims of the 1984 Union Carbide gas disaster. The residents in these wards, who were being forced to drink polluted water, would be supplied drinking water from the Kolar reservoir after new water tanks are built in the gas affected areas. Mr. Gaur said Rs.200 crore was being spent on constructing roads in Bhopal district and work on most of the ongoing road projects would be completed this year. He said almost all the villages in the district would soon be connected by proper roads. The Minister said the State had taken the lead by exempting those earning Rs.6,500 or less per month from the professional tax liability.
