Books delving into Tirukkural released

Staff Reporter

PUDUCHERRY: These are not exactly Pongal releases but are books that have been brought out recently. Two authors — both former government employees — have brought out useful books on the Tirukkural. The first one, a translation with in-depth meanings titled “Tirukkural Readings and Reflections” has been penned by writer Kalladan and the other “Dhinam Oar Aattral Tharum Arpudha Kural” by V. Natarajan, an educational consultant.

This book of 273 pages by Kalladan, a Kalaimamani award winner, has the meaning of all of 1,330 couplets with English translations. An author, who has an excellent command of Tamil, English and French, Mr. Kalladan says he took up the task of writing the commentary in English because he wanted Tirukkural to reach beyond the Tamil readers.

He now plans to translate Tirukkural into French. He has compared the meanings given by other commentary writers and reinterpreted them.
