Samba harvest commences in Nagapattinam

NAGAPATTINAM: Harvest of samba paddy crop, which has commenced in the district, has been completed in about 4,000 hectares, according to P.R. Vaithiyanathan, Joint Director of Agriculture, Nagapattinam.

He said the crop was raised on 1.07 lakh hectares and thaladi paddy crop in about 25,000 hectares in the district this year. Heavy rain last month had affected the paddy crop in about 38,000 hectares. The JDA pointed out that the samba yield was between three and three and half tonnes per hectare, lower than the anticipated yield of six tonnes per hectare. due to the heavy rain.

The Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation, which had opened 220 Direct Purchase Centres for procuring paddy from farmers in the district, is yet to procure the crop as the yield was very poor.
