“CBI acting under pressure from Sonia”

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday criticised the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for all its acts of omission and commission in the case relating to Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi’s involvement in the Bofors scandal.

BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar attacked the agency for not providing the Supreme Court with an “official” English translation of the Argentinian court’s five-month-old order (a translation given by that court), burying the case against Mr. Quattrocchi.

Alleging that the CBI was acting under pressure from Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Mr. Javadekar listed out its acts of omission over the years — it had failed to inform the country when Mr. Quattrocchi was arrested in Argentina in February last; it made the fact public only when he was given bail; earlier, his bank account in London was allowed to be unfrozen; and the Argentinian order, releasing Mr. Quattrocchi, was not properly challenged as the documentation of charges pending against him in Indian courts was not presented.
