SINGAPORE: Australia’s Immigration and Citizenship Minister Chris Evans on Wednesday said he would not appeal against the Full Federal Court’s recent ruling that restored Indian doctor Mohamed Haneef’s work visa. The decision, announced in a media statement, may ease Dr. Haneef’s passage to Australia, should he wish to resume his disrupted medical career there. His relevant work visa was cancelled in July last year even as he was granted bail in a case of terror charges that later collapsed completely. In line with the Full Federal Court’s ruling, Dr. Haneef will be able to return to Australia and work under the conditions of his “current 457 Temporary Long Stay Visa.” Open to reviewThe Minister, however, noted: “Should any further relevant information come to light in relation to Dr. Haneef, it will be open to me to re-examine the situation at that time.” Immediately after the three-judge Full Federal Court ruling on December 21 last year, Mr. Evans said Dr. Haneef was now “entitled to return” to Australia and “take up employment.”
