Kodiyeri to launch website on Kerala Police history

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala Police has developed a website which illustrates its history and traces its evolution into a modern law enforcing force.

Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan will launch the website, www.keralapolicehistory.com, on Thursday. A team led by Inspector General of Police (Armed Battalions) B. Sandhya worked on developing the website.

The team traced police circulars, orders and other historical documents relating to the police and law enforcement from the State Archives. Most of the documents, some of them as old as 1798, will be available in electronic form on the website.

The site has several interesting features, including rare black-and-white photographs of the Travancore police on royal duties and also photographs of the Cochin State forces.

The website states several interesting facts like Palayam originally being the base of the Travancore Brigade.

The Muslim Cavalry soldiers of the Nair Brigade of erstwhile Travancore were given settlements in Sasthamangalam. Some of them built the Vattiyoorkavu mosque. The Travancore Brigade owned the Pazhavangadi Ganapathy Temple.

O.M. Bensly was the first Superintendent of the Travancore Police, a post he held for nearly 30 years. He is widely regarded as the founder of the Travancore Police.
