To set up High Court Bench in city

Opposition walks out over tsunami fund issue

Rs.4 crore allotted for rehabilitating the homeless

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city Corporation council, at its meeting here on Wednesday, asked the Central government to enable the setting up of a Kerala High Court Bench in the capital city.

An adjournment motion to this effect was moved by chairman of the Education and Works Standing Committee G.R. Anil. “The Central government should show the political will to use its special powers to sanction a high court bench in the capital city as it did at Madurai,” the motion read. During the debate that followed, UDF councillors pointed out that though they supported the motion, the “inaction” of the Members of Parliament from Kerala — that of the MP from Thiruvananthapuram in particular — should also be mentioned in the motion. This led to some heated exchanges between councillors in the ruling front and in the opposition benches. Finally, the council unanimously passed the motion.

Another adjournment motion moved by councillor Veli Verghese demanding a Central enquiry into alleged irregularities in the utilisation of the tsunami-relief funds and into the State government’s reported move to slash the scholarship given to children in tsunami-hit areas was rejected by the Council after a brief debate. In protest against this, UDF councillors staged a walkout.

Plastic banned

The council adopted a resolution banning the use of plastic cups and plastic bags with thickness below 30 microns during the upcoming Pongala festival.

The council also authorised the Corporation’s health inspectors to check the production and use of unburned bricks for the Pongala festival and to ensure hygienic conditions in wayside eateries and food stalls.

The council also decided to advance Rs.4 crore from the Corporation’s plan fund to the District Collector to acquire land for building houses for the homeless and land suitable for setting up sewerage pumping stations.
