Two of the injured are said to have sustained serious injuries NEW DELHI: Eight children aged between seven and 11 years were injured when a jeep ferrying them to school overturned while trying to overtake a car at Chittranjan Park here on Wednesday. While six children who were taken to Batra Hospital were discharged after first aid, two of the injured are said to have sustained serious injuries. The accident took place around 7-30 a.m. when the Tata Sumo carrying over a dozen children to Balwant Rai Mehta Vidya Bhawan in Greater Kailash tried to overtake a car and rammed into a jeep coming from the opposite direction. Due to the impact of the collision the jeep overturned. The children were first taken to a nearby dispensary and later to Batra Hospital. Mohammed Ghosh, one of the critically injured, has received several stitches on his head, while Nupur has been kept under observation and is said to be out of danger. The school authorities claimed that the jeep had been hired by the parents despite being advised on several occasions to send their wards by the school bus. “The parents want their wards to be picked up from outside their door which is not possible for a school bus. They thus hire private jeeps, RTVs and other modes of transport risking the safety of their children,” a teacher said. The jeep driver, Farooq, has been arrested on charges of rash and negligent driving.
