Swamijis may announce compromise formula today

Staff Correspondent

The deadlock continued even as Puttige seer announced ‘victory’ on the issue of Paryaya

Pejawar swamiji likely to announce a decision after consulting two more swamijis

Udupi: The crisis facing the Ashta Maths on the ascension of Sugunendra Tirtha Swamiji of Puttige Math to the Paryaya Peetha on Friday and worship of Lord Krishna at Sri Krishna Math/temple, triggered by his foreign visits, continued here on Wednesday, with some seers hinting that a solution to the impasse was at hand.

But at the time of going to the press, the talks between the two groups remained deadlocked.

The events that took place on Wednesday evening had all the elements of a drama. Vishwesha Tirtha Swamiji of Pejawar Math and the Puttige swamiji had a meeting at Sri Raghavendra Math.

After the meeting, the Puttige swamiji said he had scored a victory in the “first phase of his struggle for ascension to the Paryaya Peetha and worship of Lord Krishna at the Sri Krishna Math”.

However, the Pejawar swamiji was yet to consult two more seers of the Ashta Maths, hence a formal announcement of the compromise formula is likely to be made on Thursday. The Pejawar swamiji might also end his fast on Thursday, he said.

Lakshmivara Tirtha Swamiji of Shiroor Math, who was with the Puttige seer, said the Puttige seer had scored a victory on the issue of ascension and worship of Lord Krishna. The palanquins carrying all the swamijis of Ashta Maths would participate in Friday’s Paryaya procession, he said.

Suyamindra Acharya of Raghavendra Math, who was a mediator in the talks between the two sides, said both the sides had “agreed partially”. But the representative of the Pejawar seer, Haridasa Bhat, said status quo prevailed on the issue. Talks were going on between both the sides.

A new condition considering a spiritual matter laid down by the Puttige seer required the Pejawar seer to consult the seers of the remaining six Ashta Maths, he said.
