Puducherry
JOYOUS moment: Children from villages near Auroville go on a ride on the occasion of ‘Kaanum Pongal’ on Thursday. PUDUCHERRY: Thousands of people from Puducherry and nearby areas thronged the beach, Bharathi Park, various places of worship and Auroville on the occasion of ‘Kaanum Pongal’ on Thursday. With shops downing shutters, several autorickshaws off the roads and offices closed, Puducherry looked as if it had shut down all activities to enjoy the day. The main bus terminus on Maraimalai Adigal Salai was teeming with people wanting to travel to places such as Chidambaram, Cuddalore, Chennai and Tiruvannamalai. Every single bus was overflowing with many people travelling on footboards. People travelled in groups by every possible mode of transport, including tractor trailers, tricycles, bullock carts and mini vans. Youngsters in big groups were seen moving around on foot from one place to wishing people on the occasion. People thronged the All India Crafts Bazaar at the Gandhi Thidal area. Food vendors at the venue and on the beach did good business. Long rows of parked vehicles lined the roads surrounding the Bharathi Park. As the police had restricted vehicular movement on Goubert Salai from the Chief Secretariat to the Court complex, vehicles were parked in two rows on the remaining part of the road.
