All set for varsity’s development drive

‘Nirmanotsavam’ begins on Saturday with the inaugural of the Teacher Education Complex at Dharmasala


KANNUR: The second phase of the Kannur University’s development drive, christened ‘Nirmanotsavam,’ will be inaugurated by Minister for Education M.A. Baby by opening the newly constructed Teacher Education Complex (TEC) at Dharmasala here at a function to be held on the Mangattuparamba campus here on January 19.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Thursday, Vice-Chancellor P. Chandramohan said that the university had plans to start an academic staff college at the TEC constructed at Dharmasala at an estimated cost of Rs.2.54 crore. The two-storeyed building had a plinth area of 1,738 sq. It was also decided to construct one more floor over the building, he added. Dr. Chandramohan said that the seminar complex being constructed on the Mangattuparamba campus would have 300 seated auditorium with stage, two mini seminar halls, catering halls with kitchen and pantry.

The work was estimated at Rs.2.81 crore, he said. The proposed Student Facility Centre was estimated to cost Rs.23.90 lakh. The residential complex for the university staff would be constructed on a land near the Government Engineering College here. The cost was estimated at Rs. 1.73 crore, the Vice-Chancellor said.

He said that the construction works for development of university’s rural campus at Neeleswaram would be completed by next academic year. The university already had a mini campus at Kasaragod. He said the university had four external funded research programmes.

Admitting that lack of adequate land would be a major handicap for the future development of the university, Dr. Chandramohan said that the university was now on a developmental trajectory. Pro-Vice-Chancellor K. Kunhikrishnan and Controller of Examinations K.P. Jayarajan were also present at the press conference.
