All Games venues to have three sources of power, says power department official “Total demand at present is 23 MW, which will go up to 88 MW during the event” NEW DELHI: The Delhi Government’s Power Department says it is ready to meet the energy demands during the Commonwealth Games in October 2010. It is confident of meeting the additional load that will be put on the system even with the resources now at hand. At a presentation before the Commonwealth Secretariat on Tuesday, the department projected that it had made the requisite arrangements to meet an increased demand for power. “On the power front we are ready to meet the demand. There are more than five 220 kV sub-stations that will come up and Delhi will generate more power to meet the increase in demand,” said Delhi Chief Secretary Rakesh Mehta. Citing the arrangements that have been made to meet the requirements during the event, a senior official of the department said: “All the Games venues will have three sources of power; there will be an overall up-gradation of the entire system to benefit consumers on the whole.” “The total demand of the Games venues at present is 23 MW; during the event, it will go up to 88 MW. That is a quantum that can be met even today. We were able to meet the demand for power when it shot up to a record 4,030 MW in June 2007,” an official said. Projecting a demand of about 6,000 MW for 2010 based on the requirements of the past one decade, the department says it is confident of its ability to meet the needs during the Games. “The current availability is going to be further augmented. We are banking on more power from Damodar Valley Corporation, Dadri, Bawana and Jhajjar. Besides, the Central Government has also taken an in-principle decision that all unallocated power from all over the country’s generation unit, which amounts to about 4,000 MW, will be kept in reserve for Delhi during the duration of the Games,” the official said.
