KOCHI: Kerala will take up issues pertaining to disparities in the unified tax regime at a meeting to be convened next week in Chennai. Finance Minister T.M. Thomas Isaac said officials of Kerala, Puducherry and the VAT empowered committee would take part in the deliberations. He was addressing mediapersons here on Thursday after a pre-budget meeting with traders, organised by the Kerala Chamber of Commerce and Industry. While the tax rate on petrol was 29 per cent in Kerala, it was 12.5 per cent in Puducherry. General goods carried a tax of 12.5 per cent in Kerala and 4 per cent in Puducherry. As entry tax did not apply to commodities for personal use, the difference in tax rates gave rise to trade imbalance. Mr. Isaac said it would not be possible to cut taxes on petroleum products.
