KUTTIPPURAM: The students of Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur districts cruised neck and neck as the 11th State Higher Secondary School Youth Festival, being held at the Government Higher Secondary School here, entered the third day on Thursday. With one more day and nearly half of the events to go, it was too early to predict the winner. The competitions resumed on Thursday afternoon after having been suspended following the drowning of a participant in the Bharatapuzha on Wednesday evening. The body of Yetu Krishnan, a Plus Two student of the Thevally Boys Higher Secondary School, Kollam, was brought to the festival venue at 9.30 a.m. on Thursday and kept there for half-an-hour for the public to pay homage. Although Yetu’s death had shrouded the festival with a pall of gloom, not many people turned up to pay him last respects. Those who paid tributes included K.T. Jaleel, MLA; District Police Superintendent P. Vijayan, and many teachers. The vehicle carrying Yetu’s body left here for Kollam at 10 a.m. Apart from his relatives, Kollam Corporation councillor P. Geeta Krishna and Government Boys Higher Secondary School Principal Suja accompanied the body. Meanwhile, K.T. Jaleel, MLA, announced an annual award in the name of Yetu Krishnan. The Yetu Krishnan Memorial Rolling Trophy will be given to the school that tops in the higher secondary competition. Education Minister M.A. Baby will give away the trophy at a valedictory function to be held on Friday evening. T.K. Hamza, MP, will preside over the function. By Thursday evening, Thiruvananthapuram district had secured 206 points. Kannur was just behind with 203 points. Kozhikode and Thrissur districts were vying for the third position with 195 and 194 points respectively. Malappuram was in the ninth position. Competitions were held in Kuchipudi, Aravanamuttu, Thiruvathirakkali, classical music, group music, Kathakali vocal, Kathakali, Maddhalam, Chenda, Tabla, folk dance, Daff muttu, mono-act, Margamkali and Poorakkali. Competitions in mimicry for boys and girls, Kolkali, miming, Mrudangam and triple drum will be held on Friday.
