KOCHI: The 25-MW Neriamangalam Extension Scheme (NES), for whose final-stage work five power generating stations were shut down for two weeks early this month resulting in load-shedding in the State, will be commissioned on March 8. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will switch on the generator at a ceremony to be organised by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), near Neriamangalam. The NES will supplement power generation by the 52 MW Neriamangalam project which uses two generators. These generators utilise water from the Kallarkutty reservoir. The NES will also utilise the Kallarkutty water and the two schemes will share the same tunnel, where the NES will have separate penstock. The NES will help the KSEB to utilise the run-off from the Kallarkutty during the six-month rainy season. The NES generator will also serve as a standby when any other generator in the Muthirappuzha basin need shutdown.
