Prasar Bharati revenue increases
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: Competition seems to have brought out the best in All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan (DD) that had held monopoly in their areas of operation till the early 1990s. For, the revenues of the two government bodies have increased leaps and bounds despite the stiff competition posed by private players.
Prasar Bharati, Director (Marketing), K. Gunashekar, told presspersons here on Thursday that the combined revenues of AIR and DD that remained less than Rs. 1 crore during 1990-1991 in the State, has increased to Rs. 10 crore during 2006-2007. It is likely to touch Rs. 12 crore during the financial year 2007-2008. “Not only has the revenue increased during this period, quality and quantity of programmes have increased during the same period,” he added.
In terms of national figures, the revenue of AIR increased from just over Rs. 38 crore in 1990-1991 to Rs. 278.80 crore in 2006-2007 showing an increase by 609 per cent.
