This Day That Age
The Subjects Committee of the 63rd session of the Congress unanimously passed on January 17 the resolution on the language question, along with an official amendment, stating that provision might be made for the use of English after 1965 for specified purposes, as provided in the Constitution. The original draft resolution had stated that the official language for all-India purposes “will have to be Hindi” and that the transition should be “gradual”. The amended resolution was moved and declared passed. Mr. C. Subramaniam, Education Minister, Madras, speaking in the discussion, called on the Congress for a categorical assurance that 1965 would not be set as a deadline for the introduction of Hindi as an all-India official language and that English would be used for all-India official purposes although English need not be regarded as the official or national language.
