Bird flu

This refers to the editorial “Containment is the key” (Jan. 17). The West Bengal government has done well by taking immediate measures to prevent the further spread of H5N1 virus (bird flu). Though it is sad to see birds being culled in large numbers, it is the best that can be done in the interest of the people. The State has moved from one crisis to another in recent times — Singur, Nandigram, the Taslima Nasreen issue, the Burrabazar fire and now the outbreak of bird flu. One hopes it will overcome it successfully.

Aniket Singh,

Mohali

The editorial rightly underlines the need to put in place pre-emptive measures to check the movement of birds which transmit the deadly virus across the Bangladesh border. The need of the hour is eternal vigil against the flying immigrants.

P.K. Varadarajan,

Chennai
