5 killed in blast at mosque

ISLAMABAD: A suicide bomber blew himself up at a Shia mosque in Peshawar, killing at least five persons and wounding many more.

The Imambargah Qasim Beg mosque was filled with worshippers at the time of the attack, which came as the Shia community prepares for Ashura — the main event during the Moharram month — this weekend.

Senior police officials in Peshawar confirmed that the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber. The bomber was trying to enter the mosque, which is located in a congested area. Police said he detonated himself as police started to check him.

Pakistan has heightened security in all cities in view of the rise in sectarian tensions during the Moharram month.
